Creativity and Connection: Hilary Cerbin's Unforgettable First Trip to Rhinebeck

In all my years of knitting, crocheting, and owning my own yarn shop, I had never made it to the New York Sheep & Wool Festival (often referred to in our industry simply as “Rhinebeck”) before. It sounded to me like a magical far-away place that I aspired to visit one day. As a co-founder of gosadi, that day came sooner than I expected, and suddenly, there I was at this amazing fall festival this year!

In anticipation of finally attending my first Rhinebeck, I held a Rhinebeck Sweater KAL at my shop in the weeks leading up to the festival. I not only needed to motivate myself to get mine done, but I loved inspiring others to make their special sweater, whether they were planning to attend or not. It worked out perfectly, and aside from maybe a few unwoven ends, my sweater was ready to debut at its first fiber festival.

The Stitchwear Designers' Checklist For Magazine Submissions

We know submitting your creative ideas and designs to a magazine can be daunting. Any time we put ourselves out there it can feel overwhelming. This handy approach will remove some of the overwhelming process and give you a clear path to submitting your creative ideas.

Often, magazines will have some outline of what they expect from you for a great proposal and that makes it easy because you instantly know what is expected. Usually, it will be a combination of some of these elements, but we recommend that you include everything on this list in your write-up. More information will set you apart and make you look prepared and professional and that’s never a bad thing.

While you can always add to what you are submitting, never skip something a magazine has made a point to require. This will likely result in automatically taking yourself out of the running.

By following our helpful guide and checklist, you can focus on the creative and not be overwhelmed by the process.

You can create the proposal in whatever software you are comfortable with, but unless otherwise stated by the magazine, should always be submitted in pdf format. You can print out the below check-list and use it every time you’re ready to submit a new design!

Pattern Skill Level

Oftentimes, designers are asked about the skill level of their products. How many times has someone said, “I’m new, I can not make that”? Then we, the designer, give them encouragement to make it by showing them the stitches they need to learn. As a designer, one thing we want to communicate to makers of our patterns, and our customers, is how they can achieve the look as it was designed.

At gosadi, we have broken down pattern levels to help designers communicate to customers what skills are necessary to achieve the design look. You can link to this page in your product listings and use it as a guide for your customers.

You will also find Skill Level in your pattern listing details screen. gosadi requires Skill Levels for listings as it enables users to search for patterns based on their Skill Level and easily identify which of your patterns are a good fit for them.

The Craft Yarn Council guide on Skill Level is an excellent place to start, but we wanted to dive deeper to create a complete Guide to Skill Level that covers all of your potential customer questions!
