Good News for Pattern Designers Selling on Etsy

On October 22, Etsy announced updates to its AI policies that directly affect pattern listings. In its announcement, Etsy shared that the changes are “an important first step” in protecting buyer trust, and that AI-generated functional guides, including patterns, recipes, and instructions, are no longer allowed on the marketplace. For designers like you who write every row, every stitch count, and every chart themselves, this is good news.

If you’ve spent months writing a pattern, testing sizes, and photographing finished pieces, you know how much work goes into creating a design. So when AI-generated patterns started flooding marketplaces, many designers felt their work was being copied, and their trust with buyers was at risk, and it was hard to get discovered amongst a sea of AI Slop.

This policy change came from designers and buyers both speaking up. Briana K, a GoSadi community member on Etsy since 2011, met with Etsy’s CEO and vice president at Etsy Up Close in New York and shared how deeply AI copycats have hurt pattern designers. Briana later wrote, “This week, Etsy banned AI-generated patterns. Pattern listings now have to show a real item made from the pattern.” Huge thanks to Briana and designers like her for leading this charge on behalf of the whole community.

What’s Changing for Pattern Listings

There are some things baked in with the new policies that impact designers and sellers on Etsy, so it’s worth taking a read, but here are some highlights.

Your pattern must be your own work. AI-generated patterns are now banned on Etsy. As Michele Costa of GoSadi puts it, “It’s been proven AI cannot deliver the quality instructions designers create in patterns, and customers can tell the difference. Make sure your patterns are yours, well written, tech edited, and with charts and schematics to give your makers a roadmap to make your design.”

Show a real finished piece. Pattern listings need a photo of an actual result made from your instructions. A simulated or AI-generated mockup no longer meets the requirement. This helps buyers know what to expect and rewards designers who test their work.

Include an unedited photo. Each listing needs at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background, with no edits of any kind. This does not have to be the first photo in the listing. Every photo must accurately represent what the buyer will receive, without hiding flaws or making the finished piece look different.

Note: there is a lot of debate on this one, and some designers do not have access to raw images for older designs. It is unclear at this time if Etsy is including standard historical editing tools in this crackdown, but if you have a raw image, it’s best to drop it in there.

  • Use AI photo editing thoughtfully. Etsy still allows AI tools on your other photos for lighting, color, cropping, resizing, or changing backgrounds. Etsy recommends making your first photo the most realistic one, and noting in your description if any images were edited with AI.
  • AI IS allowed for listing language, data, SEO, tags, etc. You can use tools like GoSadi and other AI data tools to help enhance your listing language for SEO and tags.
  • Know the exceptions. Patterns fall under special rules for showing finished results, and different requirements apply to print-on-demand, digital, customized, and made-to-order items. Review Etsy’s Listing Image Requirements policy for your exact case.
  • Expect new tools and reporting. Etsy is adding guidance when you upload listing photos, which will flag AI-generated images and offer tips. Etsy is also investing in tools to detect misleading images and fraudulent listings. Buyers will have a new option to report listings that may use misleading AI imagery. At first, these reports will help Etsy understand concerns and won’t trigger immediate enforcement. Etsy has also said it will explore ways to give buyers more context about AI use.

Review and Update Your Listings

Etsy’s update asks sellers to take a few steps now:

  • Review your existing listings. If a listing doesn’t meet the updated image requirements, update it. If a buyer opens a “not as described” case because the item looks materially different, you may be responsible for a refund.
  • Remove bot-generated listings. Listings with no human involvement are not allowed and may be removed, which can also lead to your shop being removed.
  • Double-check your details. Skill level, yarn weight, hook or needle size, sizes, and what’s included should all come from your pattern, not from AI guesses.

Can You Use AI to Write Your Listing?

Etsy’s article doesn’t directly address AI-written titles, descriptions, or tags. The new rules target AI-generated patterns and fully automated listings with no human involvement. Michele’s advice is to keep the pattern content out of AI, and to review, edit, and approve any listing copy before you publish. Even when using tools like GoSadi, you should be proofreading the listing and making sure it represents your pattern and your own voice.

GoSadi designer, Xandy Peters, who has designed knit and crochet patterns for years, is watching closely to see whether the change lasts. He points out that Etsy’s policy will only matter if it changes day-to-day shop culture, and he says it will take a few weeks to see how the new rules are enforced. He writes that the new rules show Etsy knows its customers and sellers are upset, while noting that press releases like this don’t always lead to real change.
