Practicing a new stitch can be so much fun! But I’m always torn between crocheting a swatch that doesn't turn into anything but helps me practice or making a project that might not be perfect. I think the Tanis Bag is the perfect in-between. A small, froggable project you can practice and tear back without feeling like you’re losing too much work, and in the end you have a fun and useful bag!

This pattern is designed to help beginner crocheters work their first project in the round. This simple but beautiful design includes basic stitches.

Don’t mind me as I elbow crochet into every corner of the yarn craft world – ha, ha! When I saw the cord quill at Twice Sheared Sheep I thought, “oh that could make a cool crochet pattern!” Twice Sheared Sheep only had knitting samples with the cord quill so I asked if they’d like to collaborate and they said yes! Another win for crochet everywhere! The Bennet Cowl is worked in the round using basic stitches and, of course, a cord made with a cord quill! Super beginner friendly, this cowl works up quickly and will really show your personality when you choose just the right colors for your cords!

Yarn: Any AK(3 weight) yarn approx. 190 yds of MC and 16 x 9 yds of mini skiens for approx. 335 yds. total per cowl.

Three years ago, I opened a beautiful advent kit that smoothly transitioned between colors. When I started designing my advent shawl pattern this year, I was inspired by that yarn to create a shawl that was as smooth to make as the transitions in the yarn. The holidays are always hectic, and finances are a bit tighter this year, so I wanted a pattern that was relaxing to crochet and used up every little bit of this precious hand dyed yarn. I’m so pleased with how the shawl came out. I hope you enjoy making your Rowan Shawl as much as I enjoyed making mine!

I love cowls; they’re so easy to wear! Throw them on to stay cozy. They can add interest and color to an outfit. They’re just so versatile! I particularly love the Romelyn Cowl because it combines stripes and texture. I can’t narrow down my favorite color combination so I’m sure I’ll have to make several! The unique construction of this cowl makes it fun to wear. You’ll be happy to know that the construction is still simple and beginner friendly!

Stripes and texture might be my favorite combination right now. The mix of unique stitches and the endless color combinations of the stripes make me want to make this hat over and over again! Be sure to check out the yardage table and customize the hat to have as many colors as you’d like. Don’t worry if you’re not into stripes, it can easily be made in a single color. I truly believe that you can create any project you want. But let’s be honest, sometimes a big project can be overwhelming. One of my favorite things to do is to take walks through neighborhoods. The one around my boys’ school is a particular favorite because of the variety of beautiful and historic houses. As I was wandering around one of these neighborhoods last spring, I noticed a beautiful wooden door with a classic but modern geometric design. Gorgeous texture makes me SO happy! That’s why the Tanis Cowl is my new favorite project. It has amazing texture that looks incredibly impressive but is so easy to stitch up! With alternating textured stripes, it’s a great opportunity to play with color and texture together. The buttons add another layer of visual interest and another way to show off your personality. I’m also thrilled with how the buttons open up—literally—more ways to wear this stunning cowl!

I absolutely love fingering weight yarn. It makes amazingly flowy and light weight shawls and garments. But when two strands are held together it can have a truly splendid effect. The way different colors play off each other when held together is always a bit of an adventure. They create a unique and always changing look that creates fun new colors and gives that fabric a pleasing depth. It’s completely worth experimenting with to see what fun combinations you can make.

This spring my dad and I took the most amazing road trip! We drove from Tucson, AZ to Des Moines, IA. Along the way we stopped in Taos. It is such a vibrant and beautiful community with truly stunning landscapes. The Taos Shawl is designed to commemorate that trip. This year winter has really dragged on into spring, and it has me dreaming of a nice vacation on the beach! The Miramar shawl is inspired by a relaxing beach vacation and that one skein of beautiful yarn you pick up when you’re on a special trip. It features a memoizable stitch repeat that is soothing to work and really shows off hand-dyed yarn. The open fabric of the shawl is perfect for summer mornings when a cool breeze may come in off the ocean or in the evening around a beach bonfire!

One of my favorite types of crochet projects are things that look super impressive and fancy but are easy to make! The Arlitt Bag is one of those patterns! The repetitive nature of the stitch pattern makes it simple and relaxing to work up. The amazing texture is gorgeous and versatile. Spike stitches have everything I love about crochet! They look super fancy; they can be used in so many wonderful ways AND they’re not very hard! I love watching the way hand dyed yarn colors mix and mingle in the spike stitch. My grandma Edie was not your average granny. From a generation that believed kids were to be seen and not heard, she saw us and heard us and loved us fiercely. I have so many fond memories of strawberry picking, plays in the attic, shelling walnuts in the basement, Mary Kay sample lipsticks, and, of course, crafting. Two of my favorite things in one place? Don’t mind if I do! I am a big fan of coffee; and I always have been. Even before I drank it, I remember waking up in the morning to the smell of my dad brewing a pot.
