Welcome to the Summer Mystery Loom-a-long for 2023. This year we will be making a different picture cloth each week. You may choose from any of three loom gauges for your cloth.

If you complete all three clues during the loom-a-long, I will send you a fourth pattern as a bonus!

Clue 1 is now available! There are two versions: a large print Easy to Read file, and a paper saver file in small print. 

**Timeline:**

Now thru July 12th: planning and prep

July 13 to 19: Clue 1

July 20 to 26: Clue 2

July 27 to August 2: Clue 3

This is open to loom knitters of all levels. You’ll need to be able to cast on, cast off, e-wrap knit and purl.

**Loom Options:** 

¼ inch (fine), 3/8 inch (fine) or 3/8 inch (small) with 34 pegs for flat knitting. 

**Sizes:** 

¼ inch gauge: 6.25 inch square
3/8 inch fine gauge: 7.5 inch square
3/8 inch small gauge: 8 inch square 

**Yarn:** 

55 to 70 yards of worsted weight cotton or a cotton blend will be needed for each clue. 

**Accessibility:** All of the clues will be in a visually accessible format, with 24 point font large print, all black, Arial font. There are no italics used. The patterns are also screen reader accessible and have been tested for clarity. The directions will be both written and charted. The charts are enlarged and use a color-coded format for easy reading. You do not need to use the chart to complete the pattern. A separate paper saver version of each clue will also be available.


You-Name-Its: Double Knit Hot Pads, Bibs, Squares and Rectangles is also available in my [etsy shop][1] for an accessible option. This "multi-pattern" includes step by step tutorials for the Double Knit Ribbing Stitch,  Double 8 Cast-on, Double Sided Knitted Cast-off and a two peg i-cord for a double rake loom. Directions for a 6 inch Hot Pad as well as for a Baby Bib are included. The bib has options for i-cord ties or a pull over strap. 

Additionally, cast on and row counts for other projects using the Double Knit Ribbing stitch are given:

4 inch coasters
10 inch large hot pads
12 by 16 inch placemat
12 by 18 inch placemat
14 by 60 inch table runner

**Loom**: All projects call for a double rake loom in 3/8 inch small gauge. The Hot Pads use 22 peg pairs. The Bib uses 28 peg pairs. Settings for the larger projects are given in the pattern, with the largest number of peg pairs being 50. Spacing between the two rails is 1cm. 

**Yarn**: All projects use worsted weight yarn. The Scheepes recommended above is classified as an Aran, but had the same gauge as the Lily Cotton. It is much softer to knit with and created a nice, durable fabric. 

**This is an accessible pattern**. It is written in all black text, single columns, 24 point Arial font, with no italics. All directions are fully written out with no abbreviations or charts. The pattern will read clearly with screen reader software and has been tested with screen reader software. Photos are included with alt text, but all information in the photos is fully written out in text directions.

For accessibility, this pattern is available in [my etsy shop][1]. This pattern is also available as part of my recorded class "[Brioche and Tuck Stitches][2]" in my etsy shop. The basic beanie becomes something special when the ribbed brim is a thick, cushy two-color brioche and the body is a wonderfully textured tuck stitch. All Tucked Up combines the two, while using simple loom knitting stitches to create a beautiful hat in either one or two colors. If you can knit and purl, you can make this lovely hat.

**Size** 
Unblocked: 18" circumference at the brim, 8" long.
Blocked: 18" circumference at the brim, 9" long.

**Loom**:
The sample was made on a 1/2 inch gauge loom with 60 pegs, knit in the round. **Any loom with a multiple of 4 pegs may also be used**: 36, 40, 48, 54, 60, 72, or 80 pegs.

**Yarn**: 
Sample made with Beaverslide Dry Goods 90/10 merino and mohair, in colors Snowberry, color 1, and Jersey Cream, color 2. Equal amounts of both colors will be needed, about 80 yards of each was used for the sample. 

If using a loom other than a 1/2 inch gauge, use a yarn that is a little heavier than usual for your gauge. Two solid colors, one light and one dark, are recommended.

**Gauge**:
6 spi and 8 rpi per 2" in ribbing.
6 spi and 12 rpi per 2" in tuck stitch.

**Notions**: Loom tool, crochet hook, embroidery needle and stitch markers or scrap yarn.

**Accessibility**:
This pattern comes in two versions. The Large Print easy to read version has all black text, 24pt Arial font, single columns, no italics, and fully written out directions. A large sized chart and key are also included, but not required to complete the pattern. The screen reader includes all of the above, and in addition the abbreviations have been removed to make sure the pattern reads aloud clearly, and alt text has been added to photos.

The reverse side is a solid color in 3 by 2 ribbing. You have the choice of two thumbs, the "little kitten" or "big kitty" (short or long), and the mitts may be easily lengthened at the wrist and finger ribbing, or the long thumb. For accessibility this pattern is available in my [etsy shop][1] and [Payhip shop][2]. This little picture cloth uses textured knit and purl stitches to create dimension. The little bumps have a technical name: nupps. In needle knitting, nupps have a scary reputation, but they are very easy to work on a knitting loom. The pattern is written step-by-step, line by line. A chart is included as well, if you want to use it, but it is not necessary to knit the cloth. Each line of the chart is two rows, working in both directions. The chart is color-coded instead using symbols, for easier reference.

**Sizes**: 6.25, 7, or 8.75 inches square (1/4 fine gauge loom, 3/8 fine gauge loom or 3/8 small gauge loom)

**Looms**: 34 pegs flat knit on a ¼ fine gauge, 3/8 fine gauge or 3/8 small gauge loom; sample made on 3/8 small gauge loom 

**Stitch Gauge**: ¼ fine gauge 6 stitches by 12 rows equal inch; 3/8 fine gauge 5 stitches by 10 rows equal inch; 3/8 small gauge 4 stitches by 8 rows equal inch in garter stitch

The Comforting Friend Shawls were designed based on a poll taken in the loom knitters group and originally published as a mystery loom-a-long in four parts during May, 2020. The final pattern contains directions for three shawls - a smaller, larger and asymmetrical shawl, as well as options for four different color combinations. 

**Size** – sizes are estimates that will vary with the type of yarn used and the way you block your shawl

Blocked:
Small – 72 by 21 inches
Large – 96 by 32 inches
Asymmetric – 48 by 32 inches

**Loom**: ½ inch gauge loom with 58 pegs for the smaller size, 88 pegs for the larger size or asymmetrical shawl, flat knit; 7/16 inch gauge may also be used

**Notions**: 7 (small shawl) 11 (large shawl) stationary stitch markers; loom tool, yarn needle, blocking materials

**Yarn**: Worsted weight wool or cotton blend. The color combinations and yardage are explained in detail in the pattern.

Choice one: use four separate solid colors – C1, C2, C3 and C4. Choose colors that have some contrast with each other. You can choose colors in the same color family as long as they have some contrast. Option to use one variegated and three solids.

Choice two: use a Caron Cake or Caron Cotton Cake yarn and pair it with a neutral yarn that contrasts with the colors of your cakes. This is a good way to extend the yardage of your cakes if making a larger or asymmetrical shawl. 

Choice three: use a Caron Cake or Caron Cotton Cake yarn without any contrast yarn. You will have a simple knit where the yarn will determine the color changes and you may ignore the color directions in the pattern.

Choice four: use two solid colors, a main color and a contrast color. Fewer color changes, but quite striking.

**Size**: unblocked – 48 inches by 13 inches by 1 inch; blocked – 60 inches by 20 inches by 1 inch

**Loom**: 3/8 small gauge loom with 72 pegs flat knit or a ½ inch gauge with 65 pegs flat knit; sample made on a KB large hat loom.

**Yarn**: 320 yards worsted weight yarn with a smooth texture and drape; a superwash yarn will work well for this pattern; sample made in Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Worsted multi in Cozumel colorway

**Gauge** – blocked: 22 stitches and 16 rows in four inches; matching the gauge is not essential for this pattern

Worked in DK weight yarn on a 5/8 inch gauge loom, it is a fun and chunky lace that knits up quickly. There are also notes for making a full sized shawl. A perfect gift for the bride in your family. The lace steps are written out one by one in loom knitting terms making it easy for you to follow.

**Loom:** 5/8 inch gauge loom with 35 pegs flat knit; option for 48 pegs for a larger shawl. A 1/2 inch gauge loom may be substituted with fingering weight yarn. 

All steps are completely written out and there is also a low vision enlarged chart and key at end of pattern which shows the first repeat of the pattern.

Two sizes and lots of loom options, including a one skein cowl, make this a nice gift for the special someone you want to keep warm and cozy. 

**Sizes:** two sizes, short and tall; circumference on 70 peg ½ inch gauge loom is 24 inches; short is 7 inches tall, long is 11 inches tall

**Loom:** samples knit on a 70 peg ½ inch medium gauge loom. The pattern will work on looms with multiples of 9, 10 or 11 pegs as long so the total number of pegs is an even number.

**Possible loom sizes (given in peg counts):**
Multiples of 9: 72, 90
Multiples of 10: 70, 80, 90, and 100
Multiples of 11: 66, 88, 110

The slipped stitch checkers are decorative as well as warm, creating a double layer within the cozy. Only one color is used for each row, so the knitting is a pleasure. 

**A note about your loom:**
Any loom with a multiple of 4 pegs may be used. Keep in mind that the yarn weight should be heavier that you would typically use for that loom. The goal is a tightly knit fabric that is nice and warm. 

**Size:** For the sample:
Unblocked – 10 inches tall and 19 inches around
Blocked – 10 inches tall, 24 inches around at base and center, 16 inches around at top

**Loom:** The photo sample was made on a ½ inch gauge loom with 60 pegs.

**Yarn:**  ½ inch gauge uses bulky #5 wool yarn:
Color 1 - 100 yards 
Color 2 - 50 yards
Allow additional yarn for decorations. Sample made with Malbrigo Chunky in Surf Blue and Water Green.

A stitch pattern chart is included for reference but is not needed to make the pattern. All steps are written out.

The Island Cape is a soft, thick cape that wraps around your shoulders and neck with an overlap at the front. It has a lovely drape that will fit beautifully around your back. The size is generous and the wrap-a-round style works well for a small to extra large. If additional length is needed, it is easily achieved with extra repeats. Skill level is easy plus. Follow the step-by-step directions and you will be just fine. This is a low vision accessible pattern. Two files are included. A large print file in 24 point font, and a paper saver file in 12 point font. Both files are written in plain text with minimal formatting to make the pattern screen reader and tablet friendly.

A tribute to Fisherman's Sweaters of the past, Gone Fishing incorporates eight separate panels, each with a different stitch pattern, all framed in garter stitch. The pattern is very detailed, with step-by-step instructions. If you can knit and purl, you can make Gone Fishing.

The pattern includes a cowl and a scarf, and the option of two gauges. Three files are included: a large print 24 point font Easy to Read file, and a paper-saver 12 point font file, and a screen reader version specially formatted to be read clearly by screen read and read aloud soft ware. For all three, the directions are fully written out. The Easy to Read and paper saver files do include loom knitter charts for the stitch patterns, but the pattern may be made without using the charts.

Customize the size, gauge, and even the stitch pattern to your needs. Be sure to see the tip in pattern notes for an easy way to keep track of your knit/purl sequences.
**Loom**: a 1/2 inch, 3/8 inch small, 3/8 inch fine or 1/4 inch fine gauge loom that allows you to knit in the round, large enough to make a cowl with the circumference you desire. Dozens of possible peg counts are given in the pattern.
**Yarn:** weight appropriate to your loom, but a firm fabric is best. Suggested weights and amounts:
     Caron Cakes aran: 1/2 inch gauge or 3/8   small gauge (1 skein) 
     Premier Sweet Roll aran: 1/2 gauge or 3/8 small gauge (2 skeins) 
     Lion Brand Ice Cream   sport: 3/8 small, 3/8 fine or 1/4 inch fine gauge (1 - 1.5 skeins) 
**Size:** circumference will depend on your loom – a larger loom will have narrower stripes with more frequent color changes. If you prefer a smaller cowl, you will have wider stripes with fewer color changes. An “extra-large” hat loom will make a cozy neck hugging cowl. A baby afghan or afghan loom will make a longer, shoulder wrapping cowl.
