As the Silverlode winds its way through the forest of Lothlórien, the melodious stream passes among many shapely trees. The Fellowship crosses this stream on their way into this hidden realm, and its waters wash away the weariness of their long journey. This juxtaposition between the water and the wood inspired this reversible scarf that is as relaxing to knit as it is enjoyable. The cables on the front resemble the twisting roots and branches of the forest, while the cables on the reverse imitate the flowing waters of a gentle brook.
 
**Construction Notes**
The Silverlode Scarf is worked sideways from point to point. It features an I-cord selvedge for neat finished edges and simple increases and decreases to achieve the gentle shaping.

Flecks of golden light filtering through the leaves, the graceful swaying of branches in the wind—this is Nan-tathren, the land of willows. Now sunk beneath the waves of Belegaer, The Great Sea, it was once a place of beauty and light. The Nan-tathren shawl brings these images to life again in the graceful lines and soft textures of its mesmerizing stitches.

The alternating panels of triple L tweed and 2x1 brioche create a fabric that is surprisingly plump for a fingering weight shawl, making this piece both lightweight and cozy. The modified kite shawl construction results in an elongated shape that can be worn over the shoulders or wrapped like a scarf.

Throw yourself in next time. Or just make this hat to keep your Hobbit ears warm. It’s the perfect cap for getting into mischief, and it knits up quickly enough that you’ll be done in no time and ready to keep up with Master Peregrin while he fulfills his duties as soldier of Gondor and Thain of the Shire. This hat is knit in the round with a nice deep brim that folds double for extra warmth around the ears.
  
The Fool of a Toque begins with a tubular cast-on that leads into a generous brim with 2x2 ribbing. Then the all-over cable pattern is worked for the remainder of the hat, incorporating crown decreases into the cable pattern for a tidy crown.

Yavanna Kementari is the “lover of all things that grow in the earth…from the trees like towers in forests long ago to the moss upon stones or the small and secret things in the mould.” This simple and elegant lace stole features a lace motif that evokes the growing shoots of a tender vine and speaks to Yavanna’s love for all growing things. The lace pattern is adapted from one in Hitomi Shida’s Japanese Knitting Stitch Bible. It is an easy-to-memorize, 12-row repeat that makes for meditative knitting. Drape yourself in subtle elegance with the Kementari Stole.
  
The Kementari stole begins at one end with an i-cord cast-on and is worked straight in a 12-row lace pattern repeat before ending with an i-cord bind-off. The lace pattern gives the edges a scalloped shape that can be accentuated with blocking.

Nessa is the Vala most known for her dancing, and she is swift as an arrow from the string. Inspired by the joy of her dance on lawns of never-fading green, the Nessa raglan hearkens back to the glory of Valinor, where the Valar dwelt in bliss.
  
The Nessa raglan is worked from the bottom up in the round, beginning with a tubular cast-on for the hem and cuffs. After working 1x1 ribbing for the hem, you will begin the colorwork for the body. Sleeve increases shape the sleeve gradually after the ribbed cuff, and body and sleeves are joined after the colorwork to work the yoke in the round. The yoke utilizes compound raglan shaping for a better fit, especially at the underarms. Before finishing the yoke decreases, short rows are worked to raise the back neck before the collar. The collar is worked in 1x1 ribbing and finished with a tubular bind-off. To finish, the underarms are grafted together using Kitchener stitch.

The Fangorn shawl is a center-out shawl inspired by the textures of trees and the oldest and most legendary forest of Middle Earth. The sequence knitting of the first two sections mimics the organic beauty of forest textures, such as patches of moss or the bark of a tree. The texture then gradually fades into a 3x3 rib, reminiscent of the trunks of trees reaching upwards, before resolving slowly into an ever-so-slightly-ruffled eyelet border with the airy lightness of wind in the leaves. These three textures are brought into one harmonious whole not just by the fade of colors but by the fade of textures as well. With a cozy shape that provides lots of comfortable options for how it can be worn, this oversized shawl will comfort you with woodland warmth.

When Bilbo needs an extra layer to keep him warm on his autumn wanderings through the Shire, this is the sweater he reaches for. The rustic wool yarn bespeaks his Hobbit closeness to the earth, and the cables remind him of the wandering and winding pathways he loves to explore. It’s a dangerous business, going out his front door, but at least he won’t have to worry about the danger of being too cold in his favorite comfortable sweater.
  
The body of the sweater begins in the round from the bottom up. After binding-off the underarm stitches, the front and back are worked flat separately with armhole shaping for the sleeves, collar shaping on the front, and short-row shaping for the back neck. The front and back are joined at the shoulders with a three-needle bind-off, and stitches are picked up around the neck opening to work an optional rolled collar. Stitches are then picked up around the armhole to work the set-in sleeves. The sleeve caps are shaped working back and forth in short-rows. Once a sleeve cap is complete, the rest of the sleeve is worked in the round with decreases spaced evenly down to the wrist, before finishing with a ribbed cuff.

Whether traipsing through the highlands of Dorthonion in the dead of winter or fending off a chill in the twilight evening of Doriath, Beren would have found this shawl/scarf a constant welcome companion on his journeys through Beleriand. Inspired by the pinewoods of Dorthonion where Beren was born and raised, the cables and moss stitch echo the textures of a moody forest. Lightweight, yet warm, the Beren Shawl is versatile enough to be worn in any season—as a scarf to keep you warm in winter or a light shawl to warm your shoulders on a summer evening.
  
The Beren shawl is knit flat from end to end. It uses gradual increases to create a curve along the bottom edge of the shawl. The pattern also includes instructions for modifying the finished shape for a straight scarf or a triangular shawl.

I wanted a simple hat for my newborn that would keep her head warm in our cold Wisconsin winters and also have the flexibility to grow with her as she gets older. Nothing provides this kind of warmth and size flexibility like a good 2x2 ribbing, so this simple hat was born. With elevated details like a tubular cast-on and mirrored crown decreases, this simple child’s hat is a quick knit that will keep the head of the little one in your life warm and grow with them.

Wave lapping calmly on the beach

These are some of the images that inspired this cozy cardigan design. When planning for this pattern began, I knew I wanted to use brioche for a couple of reasons. First, the plump texture traps warmth close to the body for a fabric that will keep you warm all day long. Second, I love the way brioche fabric can be textural and graphic at the same time. The wave motif worked sideways along the hem and echoed down each sleeve was a fun challenge to design, and I wanted a graphic element that captured the beauty of a windswept coastline. This is a sweater that is fun to knit and will keep you warm and cozy all winter long.
  
The Brith cardigan is an open-front raglan brioche cardigan worked seamlessly from the top down. After casting-on around the back of the neck, raglan increases are worked simultaneously with v-neck increases to shape the yoke and v-neck opening of the sweater. The body includes optional A-line shaping and a wave hem that is worked sideways starting from the center back around to the front on either side. The sleeves are worked without sleeve decreases for a slightly gathered look around the cuff and finished with a tubular bind-off. Once the body is complete, stitches are picked up along the front and neck opening to knit a generous shawl collar, which is finished with an i-cord bind-off. Finally, the hem is also finished with an applied i-cord.

Inspired by the moon and its governance of the four seasons, Arien is named after the Maia spirit who guides the moon across the sky in Arda, the world of The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. More of a shlanket than a shawl, Arien is a large rectangular wrap that combines the two colorwork techniques of intarsia and marling. Holding yarns double makes for a warm and cozy fabric, and the intarsia color blocking creates striking visual interest. Lobelia Sackville-Baggins is not a hobbit to be messed with. Although Bilbo and Frodo aren’t on the best of terms with this no-nonsense relation, one thing they can’t deny about her is that she has class. Ulmo is the Lord of Waters who “speaks to those who dwell in Middle-earth with voices that are heard only as the music of water.” The ripple motif and the colorway used for this design were both inspired by this Ainu and his connection to water. This is a simple scarf design elevated by an asymmetrical slipped stitch pattern that ripples across the face of the garter stitch background like the ripples on a pond.
  
The first version of this pattern was designed two and a half years ago, but at that inexperienced stage of my design career, I worked a background of reverse stockinette instead of garter, and the edges curled horribly. I tried every possible blocking method to get it to lie flat, but to no avail. Eventually, I frogged the whole thing and let the yarn lie in my stash for almost two years while I got over my frustration.
  
This spring, I decided it was time to revisit the design, because this yarn was still telling me it didn’t want to be made into anything but this Ulmo scarf. Now, after a fresh redesign, the pattern is finally ready. And I hope you enjoy giant scarves as much as I do, because this one is a stunner.

The Melian shawl, like its namesake, is simple and timeless. Inspired by the powerful Maia from Tolkien’s Silmarillion who graced the gardens of Lorien with her enchanting music and who ruled the guarded realm of Doriath with her husband Thingol, it is a triangular shawl with a delicate floral lace border that gently fades into swaths of soothing garter stitch, broken by a few slender columns of slipped stitches. Knitted in one solid color or in a fade, it is a wonderfully lightweight shawl that is perfect for cool summer evenings or as a transitional accessory during spring or fall.

Arda, the world in which the Silmarillion and Lord of the Rings takes place, seemed the perfect name for this shawl pattern, which was knit using Lord of the Rings inspired yarn and provides a world of creative possibilities. Bias knitting provides the perfect blend of simplicity and engaging knitting, while an easily memorizable two-row pattern repeat is simple enough for mindless knitting and engaging enough to keep you knitting. The eyelet moss stitch also creates a lovely open texture without being too hole-y while also being the perfect stitch pattern for blending subtle fades. Inspired by the smith of the Ainur in The Silmarillion, the Aulë Shawl is a modern take on the traditional triangular shawl shape. Its modular shaping and large color-blocked panels make a bold statement, and its simple stitch patterns make it the perfect pattern for showcasing any special yarns you have in your stash. The loose-ish gauge creates a warm, bouncy fabric, and even though it uses only three skeins of yarn, it makes a large shawl that lies perfectly around the shoulders.

The idea for the Refracted Sweater was born when I was playing around with slipped stitches near the beginning of the great COVID quarantine of 2020. I wanted something that would be simple to knit but striking in appearance with the elevated details that I so love to add when knitting garments. I knit the prototype that spring. It was a lovely garment that fit my wife well, but there were still a couple things that needed tweaking. I spent quite some time searching for the perfect yarns that would match the vision I had in my head and finally hit upon the perfect combo. Sarah from Traveling Yarn and Tayler of Fiber for the People were a joy to collaborate with for the long sleeved version, and over 6 months after the initial sweater I started work on the final version. This has been a long process, but I wanted my first sweater design to be as good as it could be. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous to release this pattern out into the world, since I know I still have a lot to learn about garment design, but I hope y’all will love it all the same.
  
The Refracted Sweater is a comfy cropped pullover with a striking slipped stitch pattern and plenty of positive ease. It is worked in the round from the bottom up until the sleeve divide, at which point the front and back are worked flat separately and then joined with a three needle bind-off at the shoulders. The sleeves are then picked up and worked in the round from the shoulder down to the cuff, where 1x1 ribbing is worked until twice the length of the cuff for a comfy rolled cuff.

Simple and elegant, the Lady of Lorien Shawl is a timeless crescent shawl pattern. Among its many desirable qualities is the fact that there is nary a purl stitch in the entire shawl. Slender slipped stitch columns are set against a backdrop of relaxing garter stitch, which perfectly balances cozy plumpness with lightweight wearability, and radiate as the light of the lady’s star phial. A modified old shale lace pattern finishes the piece with ripples subtly reminiscent of the waters of Galadriel’s mirror.

The Dwarrowdelf is another name for the Mines of Moria in the Lord of the Rings. I chose this name for this pattern, because the geometric colorwork design reminded me of the many geometric designs found in the architecture of Moria in many Tolkien illustrators depictions of this dwarven realm and in the Lord of the Rings Films directed by Peter Jackson. The Dwarrodelf Cowl is a fun and easy colorwork cowl pattern that provides many options for customization and stash busting. It includes two colorwork charts, one with two colors and one with three. You can work the whole cowl with one of these charts or mix and match them, as I did! It is perfect for using up scraps from previous projects, which is what I did when designing the cowl, as you can see from the pattern photos. The Vána Wrap is inspired by the eponymous character from Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, in which it is said of her, “All flowers spring as she passes and open if she glances upon them; and all birds sing at her coming.” Somewhat of a hybrid between a shawl and a scarf, the wrap starts from just three stitches and gradually widens by increasing twice as fast as decreasing. As it widens, second and third colors are brought in using intarsia to create V-shaped sections of color that turn into three long stripes as they travel along the edge. The twisted-stitch lace pattern that forms the largest block of color is engaging to knit while being easy to memorize. The intarsia, varying stitch patterns, and short rows lengths all combine to make this a fast and enjoyable project. It is also easily customizable, making it a great stash-busting project.

The Refracted Socks are my first ever sock pattern! I was having a lot of fun playing with slipped stitches and thought it would be fun to make myself another pair of socks, and so they were born. The slipped stitch pattern wraps around the leg and the top of the foot, extending down onto the heel flap. They are knit top down with a heel flap and gusset and grafted at the toe. The pattern is graded for three sizes. The slipped stitch pattern is easy to memorize and quite enjoyable to knit. Pattern includes a chart for the slipped stitch pattern and detailed instructions to special stitches and techniques used.
