“With long lines of branches leading to a rich canopy of leaves, my vest design combines texture and cables to evoke the feel of the majestic trees surrounding you whilst walking through the forest.
  
The lower front and back feature long vertical lines of tree branches knitted in a textured garter stitch rib. The branches are interspersed with leaves falling from the tree tops. The upper sections of the front and back are filled with an abundance of leaves which are “drawn” onto the knitting using 2 and 3 stitch cables.
  
The shapes formed in-between the multiple leaves in the upper canopy section mirror the multiple leaf shapes and show hints of the lower branches extending into the canopy. The sides of the vest feature the tree branch rib which also extends into the armhole shaping.”

With length fitting just above the hip and with approximately 8–12 cm / 3–4.75” of ease, the Winterfold Vest is ideal for layering over other garments for a cosy feel. Should you wish to create a longer garment, work additional length before the armhole shaping begins. Please note that this will require additional yarn. The vest is knitted flat from the bottom up in two pieces (front and back). The sides are seamed with the option to leave the lower edges open. The armholes are shaped and edged with garter stitch rib during the knitting of the front and back. For a neat edge, slip the first stitch of each armhole row purlwise with yarn in front. The neckband is also knitted in garter stitch rib, with stitches picked up after joining the right shoulder seam.

Designed to showcase beautiful yarn, the Lyra Shawl is an asymmetrical triangle shape which is knitted in one piece on the bias. This shaping method creates a knitted fabric with beautiful drape. The long length created along the curved increase edge is usually worn as the top edge of the shawl. This wide wingspan is ideal for wrapping and draping.
  
To create this asymmetric shawl shape, after set up one stitch is decreased at the start of every right side row and two stitches are increased at the end of every right side row.
  
The stitch pattern consists of two garter stitch ridges on a stocking stitch background. This pattern is repeated throughout the shawl until the border is reached. The border is knitted in a garter stitch rib pattern.
  
The main stitches used in the shawl are k (knit), p (purl), kfb (knit into the front and back of the next stitch to make 1 st), kpk (knit, purl, knit into the next stitch to make 2 sts) and k2tog (knit 2 sts together).
  
To knit the Lyra Shawl you will need 1 x 100g skein of Zakami Hand Dyed Merino Fingering Yarn (100% Fine Merino Wool, 400m/437yd per 100g skein)
  
This shawl pattern can be customised for multiple mini skeins! I used 5 of my Zakami Advent yarns in fingering weight, choosing the lightest shade as my first main shade and working the garter stitch stripes in the second lightest shade. I changed main shade and stripe shade as each shade was used up, leaving enough of the final shade to work my shawl border. Hope you enjoy this alternative way to knit the Lyra Shawl!

Inspired by the poems “A Drop fell On The Apple Tree and “Like Rain It Sounded Till It Curved” by Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), the Gentle Rain Shawl represents the individual raindrops that often precede an intensive rain shower. The poet Emily Dickinson wrote almost 1800 poems during her lifetime and many of her poems contain detailed references to the natural world and the weather. 
  
The Gentle Rain Shawl stitch pattern builds up gradually from textured eyelets worked within garter stitch to larger eyelet holes on a stocking stitch background. Each stitch pattern represents the changing intensity of a rain shower, with the final drops worked as a picot cast off edge.
  
The shawl is knitted with one skein of merino silk 4ply yarn and one skein of alpaca silk lace yarn held together throughout, with the alpaca fibres gently blurring both the yarn shades and the stitch patterns. The shawl’s curving asymmetric shape is created by knitting a right-angled triangle on the bias.

The asymmetric Join The Dots Shawl combines a great way to blend beautiful mini-skein shades with an interesting elongated stitch pattern. The shawl is knitted in garter stitch with an enlarged eyelet pattern worked in the subsequent shade. To make the enlarged eyelets, the needle is inserted into a yarn over made 3 rows below. A loop of yarn is pulled through from back to front and placed onto right hand needle. On the following row, the yarn loop is knitted together with the next stitch.
  
In the first pattern section, the enlarged eyelets are made with one loop of yarn pulled through each eyelet. In the second pattern section, three loops of yarn are pulled through each eyelet, further enlarging the holes. The shawl begins with the eyelets placed closely together, forming an openwork lattice. The eyelets gradually spread out to show more of the colour work stripes.

Perfect for layering, draping and wrapping, the Fluffy Stripes Shawl is knitted lengthwise as a long crescent shape. Beginning with one narrow end, the shawl is gradually increased to full depth. A single centre segment is worked, followed by decreases to match the increases.
  
The contrast shade stripes are knitted with Walcot Yarns Fluff. These textured stripes are placed between smooth sections of stocking stitch worked in the main yarn, Walcot Yarns Opus. As the shawl widens, the stripes gradually increase in length. The contrast yarn is also used to cast on and cast off the scalloped edging pattern, creating fluffy edges to the openings between each scallop. The scallop flaps are worked in garter stitch.

The Stonehaven Shawl is inspired by a delightful visit to the Aberdeenshire coastal town of Stonehaven. The scalloped pattern reflects both the breaking waves of the North Sea and shapes within a beautiful metal fence running along the sea front promenade.
  
The shawl is constructed top down, starting with a wide tab and then continuing as a central wide rectangle and two outer triangle wings. The overall shawl shape is similar to a crescent or a wide semi-circle. The scallop pattern is knitted within the central rectangle, with reverse stocking stitch ridges extending into the outer triangles. The whole of the lower border is also worked in the scallop pattern using a contrasting shade.

The Field Notes Neck Warmer is a quick to knit mini-scarf, with an interesting stitch pattern inspired by the picturesque landscape at Chilton Grounds Farm.
  
Each year, the beautiful hedgerows that grow alongside the medieval ridge and furrow fields burst into blossom. The stitch patterns of this versatile neck warmer reflect these features, with each blossom pattern section intersected by knitted ridges and furrows.
  
The neck warmer is knitted lengthwise, starting with a ridged triangle shape. Once the full width is reached, the pattern continues as a long thin rectangle, before decreasing to form a matching triangle at the other end. The neck warmer can be fastened with your favourite shawl pin or wrapped around the neck with the ends tucked in to keep you cosy!

The Ridge and Furrow shawl is inspired by a fascinating feature of the landscape at Chilton Grounds Farm.
  
Medieval farming practices required the use of oxen to pull heavy ploughs over the fields. The resulting ridges and furrows are still visible today. The end of each furrow has a distinctive reverse S’ shape due to the way the plough was turned before the neighbouring furrow was ploughed. The shawl pattern combines an eyelet reverse ’S’ pattern with a series of knitted ridges and furrows, representing the ancient and modern landscapes.
  
The shawl is knitted as two joined long right-angled triangles, the first of which is increased to the centre point. The second triangle is decreased by the same number of stitches to match the first. The stitch pattern is reversed at the mid-point, creating a mirror-imaged design.

The Criss Cross shawl is inspired by a fascinating textured parking surface! The concrete slabs have a criss cross pattern and the grass has grown through these shapes, creating a textured grid of crosses set within a textured concrete surface.

The Tessellation Shawl is inspired by the Leadenhall Building in the City of London, UK, designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. The structure of distinctive building contains multiple triangular shapes which inspire the shawl’s textured stitch pattern. Each individual triangle motif appears to combine with the next to form a tessellating grid pattern across the shawl. Each triangle shape is knitted in a combination of knit and purl stitches. 

The shawl’s asymmetric shape is created by knitting a right-angled triangle on the bias. This shawl can be knitted with just one ball or skein of 4ply yarn (approximately 400m) making it an ideal travel project or gift for a special person.

My quick and cosy snowball cowl design combines a luxury yarn with a quick to knit design to create a delightful winter accessory. This speedy knit uses 7mm needles and a bulky weight yarn for cosiness.

The snowballs are made by knitting large bobbles inside a cable circle shape. The large snowball bobbles are worked quickly over 5 rows in stocking stitch as part of the main pattern, rather than turning the work continually as is more common with a one-row bobble. The cowl is worked as along rectangle, with the cast-on and cast-off edges seamed together after knitting to create the loop.

Wear as an elegant long loop or wrapped around the neck twice for cosy warmth.

Inspired by three different yet related shapes of tiles, designer Emma Vining presents a stunning textural pullover.
