I am discovering that I love to wear a vest. More and more they the garment I grab to layer over whatever I am wearing. This Fall I decided I wanted a more modern look for a vest, something with a little swing and sass. The Abbreviated Vest does it for me!

The Abbreviated Vest is a very short vest with lots of personality, expressed in the split ribbed waistline, deep raglan armholes and wide neck. 
This has been designed for the advanced beginner knitter who wants to try a garment. Something a little fun but not too difficult a knit. The Abbreviated Vest will fit the bill.
The pictures are of me in the x-large size. I love it! Abbreviated is a fun and comfortable knit!

I chose Noro Ito, because it is a striping yarn so it added interest without me doing any heavy lifting, and it is oh so cozy! I split the ribbing at the bottom and made the hem line uneven for extra movement. I created the sleeves with raglan shaping for easy knitting and to cover and keep my shoulders warm. The wide neckline sits very nicely on top of anything I choose to wear!

There is nothing I love more than playing with all the techniques that knitting offers us as creative ways to use stash! Entrelac, with its multiple squares, set up in rows or rounds offers multiple options. In this hat I chose a solid coloured yarn and followed it up with a self striping yarn. I could have knit the hat with only the Noro Saiun (self striping) or knit each round of squares in a different colour or each square itself in a different colour. The possibilities are as varied as our imaginations!
  
Sometimes called Swedish Basketweave, Entrelac is a method of creating a look of a woven pattern by knitting individual triangles and squares. The technique employs both short-rows and the picking up of stitches. The knitting is not difficult once you understand the concept of how the squares are created. The Entrelac technique creates a diagonal, bias fabric, which is looser and stretchier in nature than regular knitting and is usually knit with smaller needles than the ball band of the yarn would suggest.
  
This is a large or floppy beret, meaning it fits more like a slouchy hat than a standard beret. The crown shaping is created by decreasing the size of the rectangles.

Rolling Cables Beanie Pattern PDF - Intermediate Yarn

Capture the elegance of the past with this classic cloche. Keep it simple by working the striping pattern without the beads or go all out and bead the stripes to add that touch of glamour.
  
The knitting is simple, a basic stockinette fabric with severe shaping at two points to create the side point details, followed by straight knitting to the crown. The crown is shaped in the standard 8-point decrease.
  
**Materials:** 40cm 16in 3.25mm US #3 circs and same dpn’s, 0.60 or 0.75 mm hook for the bead placement, 50grs fingering weight (4-ply) yarn. A yarn with softness and drape will give the best results. If beading approx. 1200 size 8/0 beads are required.
  
The sample was knit with 3 colours of Cashmere Reborn.
  
**Gauge:** 28 st in 10cm 4inches and 40 rows in 10cm 4inches

This is a classically styled beanie. It is only available in one size, adult medium. The sizing can be adjusted by working with smaller or larger needle sizes.

Alpine Fair-isle Beanie Knitting Pattern PDF - Intermediate Yarn

Double knitting is really quite simple. It takes longer to knit an item in double knit as you are really knitting two things – the main item and the mirror of the main item.
  
The technique of working the yarn is very similar to 1 by 1 ribbing. Knitting on the main or facing side and purling on the mirror or inside (opposite side). The stitches from both sides sit side by side on your needle and you knit all the front sts, no matter the colour, and you purl all of the back sts no matter the colour. You do carry both yarns as you knit each round.
The yarns do not require catching as all the floats, even the long ones are on the inside of both facings of the garment being created.
  
Cuffs are not shown.
  
**Materials:** 2 shades dk weight yarns, approximately 75 grs or 150m of each – sample was knit with Ancient Arts Superwash Merino in the Mineral and Cranberry colourways: 4.0mm US #6 60cm 24inch circs for cast-on, 3.25mm US #3 60cm 24inch circs for body; markers and the regular notions.
**Note**: 2, 4.0mm US #6 dpn’s are needed for the picot chain cast-on.
  
**Floral cuff** requires 2 sets of dpn’s – 4.0mm US #6 for the cast-on and 3.25mm US # 3 for the body, and approx. 50 grs dk of each colour for a pair.
Work chosen cast-on as described in cowl and then work the 31 rounds of the cuff chart.
  
**Gauge:** 20 sts in 10cm (4 inches) worked in double knitting with DK yarn and 3.75mm needles.

**Notes on Double Knitting**
  
1.  Always needs a smaller needle to achieve the required gauge. It is a loose technique.
2.  Every stitch is worked and alternates between knit and purl. One knit followed by one purl.
3.  Both yarns need to be moved for every st, back and forth like 1x1 ribbing
4.  a. Ie – both yarns in back if the next st is to be knit or both yarns in front if the next st is to be purled.
5.  Double knitting is always worked in at least 2 colours.
6.  a. For our purposes main (m) is the colour facing us and contrast (c) is the inside colour of the knit.
7.  Double knitting is usually most effective if the colours are highly contrasting.
8.  Each square on the chart represents 2 sts, 1 knit and 1 purl
9.  a. The knit st is worked in the colour shown and the purl st is worked in the contrasting colour.

The béret is perhaps one of the most recognized and copied hat style in the world.  It is synonymous with French style, Basque revolution and military strength.

A béret is also very easy to knit.  Faster than an average toque with a very standardized shape and rules.

This pattern will make a classic béret without any colourwork.  Just start with your colour and work shapings as written.

The classic béret has less ribbing than a standard toque, followed by a large increase round and then straight knitting up to the decrease point.  

This béret is considered a standard, classic béret in that the body is not too big.  The crown decreases at 7 points with an interesting zig-zag decrease line.

**Materials:** approx. 50 grs each of 2 colours of worsted weight yarn (sample was knit with Brooklyn Tweed Shelter) 3.75mm US #5 40cm 16in circs and 4.5 US #7 40cm 16in circs and dpn’s. 10 to 11 inch plate or flat, round object for blocking

**Gauge:** 20 sts in 4inches in stockinette knit in the round on 4.5mm needles.

**Size:** small, medium and large, approx. 18, 20, 22 inches around band.  Sizes are based on the band length not the pattern on the hat body.  


Cozy Bells is a tea-cozy designed to celebrate Christmas every day of the Year. The bells will jingle softly as the tea is poured and your tea will remain warm for quite a white! I recommend printing this pattern in colour as there are many how to pictures to go along with the embellishing.
  
I have been knitting Tea Cozies pretty much as long as I have been knitting. At first - they were just for me. I knit them for my pots and as gifts for friends. Once I started to design, I started to share the pattern in a whole collection of whimsical cozies.
  
And just because I can, and just because I think a cozy should be whimsical and more than a little over the top; This year, I have designed a Christmas Themed Cozy. Covered in Christmas themed embellishments, holly and berries, bells that jingle softly and a large poinsettia, this cozy is simply a homage to everything I love about Christmas!
  
Please note that the cozy is attractive without the embellishments. So, if you are not a fan of embellishing the Cozy will still look great on its own!
  
**Materials:** Worsted Weight Yarns, 150m of main, and 100m of 3 secondary colours, sample used Estelle worsted yarns, 4mm US #6 40cm 16-inch circular needles and 3.5mm US #4 dpns, markers and the regular notions. If bells are desired in the bell shapes – 1 bell per shape created will be required.

Knitted Christmas Tea Cozy Pattern: Bells, Holly, Poinsettia (PDF)

This has been the year of Weather. This Mosaic stitch pattern reminded me of the circular wind patterns that comes with some of those types of weather, such as Cyclones, here on the West Coast; and Hurricanes, on the East Coast.
  
So I designed a hat.
  
Mosaic knitting is a method of creating colourwork and textural patterns without carrying yarns across your work.
  
**Materials:** Chunky weight yarn, 75 grs of the main, white and 50 grs of the contrast, rust, sample was knit with Eco Scandinavian Chunky; 5.0mm US #9 40cm 16-inch circs and 6.0mm US #10 40cm 16-inch circs and dpns; markers and the regular notions.
  
**Gauge**: 15 sts in 4 inches in mosaic pattern – lightly stretched.
  
**Size:** One size – approx. 20 – 22 inches to fit the average adult or teen head.
  
**Notes on Mosaic Knitting:**
Mosaic knitting is colourwork without stranding, instead you knit with one colour and slip the stitches for the second colour. Each colour is worked in a two-row sequence. Mosaic knitting patterns are easiest to read when in chart format. The colour squares at the right side of the graph, column 0, represents the colour the rows are knit with, while the other colour is slipped where indicated.
  
**Notes on Reading Mosaic Charts:** When working circularly read all rows from right to left and work only with the colour indicated and slip the colour that you are not working with. Always slip your stitches purlwise.
  
**Notes on Sizing** – the pattern can be made larger by working with a larger needle size, a 6.5mm US #10.5 or 7.0mm US #10.75 needle. The mosaic st is a very forgiving style of knitting. For a smaller size, go the opposite way, try a light weight chunky or heavy aran and work with 5.5mm US #9 needles.

Pattern is a combination of charted and written instructions.

This is a new pattern in my Salish Sea Collection.  Patterns inspired by the West Coast and usually knit in the Cowichan style with yarns created for this style of knitting. 

Perhaps the heaviest cozy I have ever designed.  Working with the Prairie Sea Fusion was a breeze and the sheer weight of the yarn has created the coziest warmer ever!

Dancer Cozy is a Gentleman’s Style Cozy.  This means that the spout and the handle are not covered by the cozy and the pot is simply lifted and the tea poured without removing the cozy.  

It is my favourite style of cozy as I find the handle gets too hot with most pots if it covered by the Cozy.

What this means for the knitter.  It means that you will start the cozy in the round, then split the cozy in two and will knit both sides separately and then the cozy will get reattached into a round, continue working, and finishing, in the round.

The Dancer Cozy is shaped and finished with a grafting line just like a sock toe.  

A photo tutorial on making and attaching the fringe is included in the pattern.

**Materials:** 7.0mm US #10.75 40cm 16in circs and dpn’s, approx. 40 yds of each of 3 colours of Super Bulky Yarn, sample was knit with Prairie Sea Fusion, shades 2, 4 and 5; heavy big eye needle, BORM and the regular notions.

**Gauge:** 12 sts in 4 inches in Cowichan style stranding (usually slightly tighter than average stranding, floats are caught after every st)

**Size:** One size – medium to large – excluding fringe – approx. 8.5in high and 10in wide


B.B., a Basic Bulky Balaklava, is a quick knit in a bulky (adult sizing) or chunky (child sizing) yarn. The neck is long enough to tuck under a coat and shaped up to the face to keep your throat and neck warm. The ribbing on the hood keeps the opening tight to your face.
  
The balaklava starts in the round and then shifts to working back and forth. The top of the hood part is worked in easy short rows (no wrap and turn) and the face is framed with ribbing.
  
**Materials**: 250 grs bulky yarn approx. 220m, sample with knit with Estelle Merino Big, 8.0mm, US #11, 60cm 24in circ, 6.5mm US #10.5 40cm 16in circ; 100 grs chunky yarn approx. 125m, sample was knit Estelle’s Highland Alpaca Chunky, 6.0mm US #10 40cm 16in circ, markers and the regular notions.
  
**Gauge**: note the ribbing pulls in – do not block or stretch your gauge swatch.
Bulky – adult size, 20 sts in 4 inches, in rib unblocked and unstretched on an 8.0mm needle knit flat. Approx 22 inches around the face opeing.
Chunky – child size, 25 sts in 4 inches, in rib unblocked and unstretched on a 6.0mm needle knit flat. Approx 16 inches around the facing opening.
  
**Sizes:** Two sizes; bulky yarn – teen to adult; chunky yarn – toddler to child
**Notes on Sizing** – sizing can be controlled in two ways, changing needle sizes and tightening or loosening gauge and/or changing the number of rows knit when knitting back and forth to create the face opening.

Full of ups and downs, twists and turns, and curves everywhere, Turbulence reflects some of life’s journeys.  Right now, everything and everyone seems to be experiencing Turbulence.

This pattern consists of basic cables.  The cables are offset with no purl st dividers.  This gives the basic cable a pared down clean shape, one that morphs as each cable twist is made.  Our cables appear to zig and zag rather than twist over and around.  The curves are still there but muted by the angles.

The cables change in size as the pattern moves into the crown, making the texture continue right up until the beanie is cinched closed.

The pattern is sized from child to x-large adult.  Sample shown is size medium.  The fabric created by the offset cables is very stretchy.

**Materials:** 3.5mm US # 4, 40cm 16in circs plus 4.0mm US #6, 40cm 16 in circs and dpns; 100 to 220m of dk weight yarn (sample was knit with Ancient Arts Superwash DK, colour WaterLily); cable hook, markers and the regular notions.

**Gauge:** unblocked, but stretched lightly, 27 st in 10cm/4inches

**Sizes:** Sizes are approximate due to the stretchy nature of the fabric.  Child – approx. 16 inches, small adult – approx. 17-18 inches, medium adult – approx. 19-20 inches, large adult – approx. 21-22 inches; x-large adult – approx. 23 inches


Have you ever played with the loop st? While I have played with it before, I had never designed anything. I decided that I needed to create something a little playful for the upcoming season.
  
I felt that all the would be Gnomes and Santas out there might appreciate a new look! Once the hat was knit the mittens just sort of knit themselves! LOL!

Create a little whimsey to celebrate the Fall and Christmas Season. Choose to knit Jingle with a white brim and a red body and a Santa hat is made or knit it as shown for a more vintage feel to the season.
  
The mittens have created a classic style with shaped, grafted tops and inserted after thought thumbs.
  
Hat and small/medium mittens can be knit as shown from 1 hank of each colour of Eco Shetland Worsted. There is enough yardage to knit the hat and the medium/large mittens, but the colours will have to shift.
  
**Materials:** 3.75mm US #5 16 in circs, 4.5mm US #7 16 in circs and dpn’s, 100 grs of each colour in a worsted weight yarn. Sample hat was worked with Eco Shetland Worsted (if using only two colours 100grs of yarn for loop st and 150 grs for the body of the hat), 6 jingle bells, markers and the regular notions.
  
**Mittens:** Small/mediium, 75 to 80 grs mixed colour yardage and Medium/large, 90 to 95 grs mixed colour yardage.
  
**Gauge:** 20 sts to 4 inches over the stranded pattern after a light blocking.
  
**Size:** One size for the hat, average adult. Mitten sizes small/medium and medium/large
  
Colour patterning are fully charted with minimal written instructions.

Jingle Gnome Chapeau & Mitten Knitting Pattern PDF - Colourwork - Loop Stitch

Thrumming was born in Newfoundland, off the east coast of Canada. It is a technique for adding a layer of wool roving to create a very warm and almost totally wind and waterproof item. Pieces of roving are knit in to individual stitches with the extra length of the roving remaining inside. With wear, these rovings’ felt, creating the barrier needed to protect us from the icy winds.
  
The Twillingate Headband is knit flat with garter stitch edges and a stockinette center. The headband is shaped with a narrow back band to allow the band to rest under the hair or over top as desired. The band is thrummed from one ear to the other to keep ears and forehead protected from the wind and cold. The inside (stockinette part of the band) has been shaped with easy (no wrap with the turn) short rows to keep the garter stitches tight to the skin and give room for the thrums to sit comfortably on the head.
  
The headband is 2.75 inches wide at the narrowest point and 6.5 inches wide at the widest point.
  
This pattern is written and charted.
  
**Materials:** approx. 125 yds, worsted weight wool, non-superwash, and approx. 25 grs of roving (we recommend merino for its softness); 3.75mm US #5 needles, straight or circular, scissors, markers and the regular notions.
  
**Gauge:** in garter st, 6 sts in 1 inch; in stockinette with thrums – lightly stretched – 19 sts is 3.75 inches; 8 rows in 1 inch
  
**Size:** variable, should be at least 1 inch shorter than the head measurement – easy to adjust – brown/blue sample is 21 inches around and fits a 22-inch head comfortably
  
There are two sections of the headband that can be adjusted for length - the center thrumming section, every repeat adds or takes away 2 inches of length - and the finishing at the end of the headband, the garter stitch section can be lengthened or shortened to fine tune the basic fit.

East Coast Twillingate Knitted and Thrummed Headband Pattern PDF



The GreenMan KAL will start Friday September 13th.

My favourite shawl shape is circular so this shawl is circular.  It will start at the center and be worked out in rounds from the circular start.  It is a lace shawl.  There will be patterning on every round in some sections.  One section will be knit like an edging, but not be an edging. It will be Oak leaves and Acorns patterning. 
Most of the motifs will be based on leaves or flowers.  

The shawl can be embellished with beads and dimensional leaves and flowers.  The samples will be embellished.  Embellishments are always up to the knitter.

I am planning on working with an assortment of beads.  I recommend size 8/0 beads in an assortment of colours.  I will be working with a few earthy shades, but I want to add a few "fancies", crystals, drops and drops with shapes like leaves.  

The bead I am planning on using the most is a [iridescent delica][1], size 8/0.  Something that will look like raindrops.  These beads will be featured on the edging.

This shawl can be knit with lace weight or fingering weight yarns.  I am working samples in both.  The laceweight is being knit with Schoppel-Wolle Lace Ball 100 with an edging knit in Juniper Moon Findley.  The fingering weight shawl is being knit with Queensland collection Kathmandu fingering in 3 colours.

Are you familiar with the Greenman motif?  His face has been part of many heritages and folklores for hundreds of years.  His image has fascinated me for a long time and I finally decided to recreate it in a knitted format.  And knit a shawl in celebration of his role of  change, regrowth in our modern world.

The pattern will be released in 5, maybe 6 sections. I am planning a double lace edging, just not sure if I will release each edge as a single or as a double unit :smiley: 

The release dates for each section are; Sept 13th, Oct 4th, Nov 29th, Jan 3rd and Jan 31st, 8am pacific time.

The cost will include 4 workshops that will focus on teaching some of the specialized skills used in the shawl, as well as full participation in the one line aspects of the KAL. There will be video's to accompany each section of the shawl.  For example with the first section there will be video's of how to start a circular shawl and a video about reading charts.

This pattern is mostly written with a small chart for the textured section

Small details matter and this set has just a couple of detail notes, enough to make them stand out.  And as these accessories sit so close to the skin why not knit them with the softest yarn you can find.

The fingerless mitts are simple and both are knit the same with no right or left mitten.

Pick a soft hand dyed Merino, or a Merino/Cashmere blend or even a Merino/Yak blend, just like these pieces, for supreme close to the skin softness and knit this cowl and mitts up for yourself or as a gift for a friend!

**Materials:** 
Cowl – 4.0mm US #6, 60cm 24 in circ; Mitts – 4.0mm US #6 and 3.5mm US #4 dpn’s; 100 grs, 250m 275yds, dk weight yarn.  Sample used Gathering Yarns Merino Yak.  Waste yarn, markers and the regular notions.  
**Note** – the mitts were added as there was slightly over 50 grs left from my skein – but I finished the mitts with only about 3 grs to spare.  The mitten pattern was written to reflect that the yardage could become an issue.

**Gauge:** 
Cowl – 20 st in 4 inches in stockinette after a light blocking; Mitts – 24 sts in 4 inches in stockinette after a light blocking.

**Size:** 
Cowl – 28 inches around base, 24 inches around body and approx. 9 inches deep; Mitts – 7 inches around and 8 inches tall


The pattern is both written and charted.
  
The Cockle Shell Stitch is a favourite of mine. That contrasting pop of colour looks like a row of flowers just jumping out from the background. The stole style of shawl showcases this stitch beautifully.
  
Knit with B.C. Garn Loch Lomond Lace in the shades 14 (eggshell)(3 hanks) and 23 (baby pink)(2 hanks), the colours together just sing of Spring.
  
This pattern is very adaptable. The stripes of pattern can be made in many different ways. Play with the striping patterns. Stripe the background or stripe the pops! Eliminate the center panel and just work the cockleshell pattern.
  
There is a “pithy” set of instructions for adapting the pattern to a fingering weight scarf at the end of the stole pattern.
  
The shawl is knit in two pieces and the then grafted together.
  
**Materials:** 800m of main colour, 500m of the secondary colour of a heavy lace weight yarn (300m to 50grams); sample was knit with BC Garn Loch Lomond Lace; 3.75mm US #5 needles, straight or circular, markers and the regular notions.
  
**Gauge**: 20 sts in 10cm, 4in in Diamond Chain Lace – blocked and relaxed.
  
**Size:** Dimensions – 62 cm, 25.5 inches wide and 158cm, 62 inches long
