*Disruptive stripes fool the eye. Instead of seeing vertical stripes across a body, making it look wider, Spaced Oddity has the eye playfully jumping around from colour to colour.
Each stripe is made up of two colours. Each colour in a single stripe takes up half the circumference of the sweater, starting and stopping off centre to emphasize the symmetric asymmetry and give it balance. This sweater uses an odd number of skeins, each skein a different colour. This creates a relatively mindless colour sequence.

Choose a chest size that is 5-15 cm / 2-6 inches larger than your upper torso measurement (high bust). Hem/hip circumference should be minimum 15 cm / 6 inches larger than your largest hip circumference. 20 - 25 cm / 8 - 10 inches larger will give you a swingier cardigan.
**Sample size:** I knit size 8, with 15 cm / 6 inches of ease at my upper torso and 5 cm / 2 inch bust darts and 10 inches of ease at the hem.
**Bust Darts:** Instructions for working 5 - 10 cm / 2 - 4 inches of bust darts are included in the pattern.

**GAUGE**
25 stitches and 34 rows per 10 cm / 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch worked flat and in the round (for the sleeves).

* Needles for yoke and body: 3 mm / US 2.5 circular needleslength: minimum 70 cm / 28 inches Always choose a needle size that gives you the pattern gauge. For reference, I am a very loose knitter who often needs to go down two needle sizes. Please judge your needle size accordingly.

*It's said that the Northern Lights are the reflection of the armor and shields of the Valkyrie as they led fallen warriors to Odin. I believe handmade clothing is armor that shields us and protects us.*

*I wanted to create a sweater that illustrated the bold, dynamic intensity of the Northern Lights, from quiet ribbons of color that seem rooted to the earth, to the wild chromatic dance of light sweeping freely through the sky. I started with the yarn: handpainting to echo the intensity of the Lights dancing through the dark night sky. Then the stitch pattern, borrowed from previous designs, but with an asymmetrical twist that is echoed through to the sleeves and hem. The "lights" start quietly over the left shoulder and end in a cape-like riot of colour and texture over the right shoulder and sleeve.*

**PATTERN NOTES**
Construction method: 
This sweater is worked seamlessly in the round from the neckline to the hem. 
Sleeves are worked in the round after the body is completed. 
The asymmetric quality of the yoke in this pattern is created by changing the stitch pattern laterally through the yoke. Approximately 1/3 of the yoke stitches are worked in the Garter ridge pattern (Section C); 1/3 are worked in the Variable Wave Pattern (Section A); and 1/3 are worked alternating both patterns (Section B).

**Yarn Characteristics**
The sample shown uses a 3-ply DK weight merino. The yarn is round and smooth.

**Yoke (CC1, CC2, CC3):** Look for variegated yarns with color repeats that range from 5-10 inches/13-25 cm long. The 3 yoke colors should fade easily into each other. Look for colorways that have a common color between them. In the sample, CC1 and CC2 have the same blue-green, and CC2 and CC3 have the same deep blue-violet.

Body: should be a semi-solid.

**Recommended needle size**
Always use a needle size that gives you the gauge listed below - every knitter's gauge is unique
* 1 US #3/3.25 mm circular needle, 16-inch/40-cm for starting the yoke
* 1 US #3/3.25 mm circular needle, minimum 28-inch/60-cm for body
* 1 set US #3/3.25 mm your preferred needle for working a small circumference in the round

Moonbean is a cropped, elbow sleeve pullover that’s knit top-down in a circular yoke construction. **Pattern for Not So Mysterious KAL 1 (February/March 2022)**

**What is the Not-So-Mysterious Sweater KAL?**
When I started designing Edgeways, I was in the middle of teaching many different sweater fit classes. I thought this would be an excellent sweater pattern for knitters to use to learn how to make modifications for their bodies. I would include bust modifications, and instructions for determining what other changes knitters might need to make. Offering the pattern in stages, like a mystery knitalong, made sense. But this is a sweater. We need to know what our sweater will look like before we commit! And so, this is a not-so mysterious KAL. I hope you’ll join me!

Yarn substitution:
Choose a yarn that is round, smooth, and even in texture. A 3-ply or 4-ply sport or heavy fingering will work well. The stitch pattern works best with a solid or semi-solid color.

Adjacent is designed to use the predictability of self-striping yarn in
a structured, organized way utilizing atypical shapes for this yarn. Individual triangles are worked and attached as you go without cutting yarn. The sample yarn has a striping pattern of ten colors. Nine stitch patterns were chosen to cycle through the color sequence, ensuring each color is worked in a different stitch pattern each time it comes around again.
The wingspan/width can be lengthened by working more triangles in the first tier. The depth can be made shallower by completing fewer tiers of triangles, or deeper by adding tiers.

A creative take on the wedge recipe for shawls, Radialactive uses two yarn bases in two different weights dyed in the same ombré colorway to create a stripe pattern that fades away in the middle. The ombré is started from different ends of each skein, creating color contrast at the beginning and end of the shape, with texture contrast through the center of the shawl.

so a direct substitute of another long ombré is the obvious choice.
However, there are other concepts that would make wonderful use of this structure:
Two yarn bases in different weights (fingering and lace) in the same semi-solid or tonal colorway would be a monochromatic way to play with transparency
A solid yarn for MC and a gradient for CC would allow you to play with color shifts alongside a solid ground
Use the same yarns, but start both MC and CC from the same end of the ombré. This would make the alternating texture and transparency the focal point.

Hexagons are fun to knit and hold amazing design possibilities, but can be difficult to wear as a shawl. In order for them to be wide enough
to wear comfortably, they also have to be very deep, which is not as manageable. With Soundscape, that issue is solved with short rows. Short rows are worked to increase the width of the shawl faster than the depth would normally be worked. Contrasting stripes emphasize the short-row structure in a playful way. The result is a cozy shawl to wrap up in on cold days.

**Yarn Substitution**
Vintage No. 6 is a fingering-weight yarn with a recommended gauge
of 2432 stitches per 4 inches (10 cm); however because the yarn is worsted spun, lots of air is trapped in the fibers, allowing it to be knit at
a larger gauge with no issues. Look for fingering- weight, worsted-spun yarns that have a similar recommended gauge, with the understanding that yarns from individual flocks and breeds will have characteristics that make your shawl unique.

**Commercial Substitute**
The Fiber Co. Arranmore Light. Although a DK- weight yarn, Arranmore Light is worsted spun, comes in a wide variety of colors, and knits up in a similar fabric to the Middle Brook Vintage No. 6.

Sideways triangles (page 16) are a joy to wear. They wrap around your neck and shoulders with lots of coverage but not a lot of bulk. Stripes are addictive to knit, pushing you forward to knit the next one. Add some bias shaping in the mix to create fault lines and the illusion of folds, and you have Flexture.

**Yarn Substitution:**
Drape is the primary quality needed for the body of this shawl. The high level of silk content takes care of that in the Gobsmacked gradient, but fibers like linen, bamboo, and rayon will work as well.
If you can’t find a long gradient, consider putting together your own using individual skeins of yarn in colors that blend well into each other, along with accent colors for the stripes (see Breaking
the Rules, page 110). The stripes make excellent break points for changing colors.

In Endorphins, colours are divided into lights, mediums and darks. While the stripe pattern remains constant through each piece of the sweater, the dark and medium colours can be interchanged from piece to piece. Only light stripes remain consistent (same colour, same placement) throughout the sweater. Because the eye is naturally drawn to light colours, these stripes appear closer, so capture our attention first, pushing the medium and dark stripes into the background. With light colour stripes acting as one consistent element to focus on, differences in dark and medium colour stripes throughout the sweater are less noticeable.

Sample version is worn with 22 ease in the full bust and 15 ease in the hips, however sleeve fit is the most important factor in ensuring a good fit for this sweater. I recommend choosing the size closest to your own arm size as follows: 
- measure your arm just above your elbow.
- choose the size that closest to this measurement. For example, if your arm measurement is 15.5, choose size C, which has a 16 armhole circumference.
