Is it a shawl, is it a cowl, is it something else? Yes! And why can it not be both, or more? As many of my students know, I wear a lot of bright Summer colors all year long, life is too short to just wear black! I was given some Cumulus yarn this year which a friend bought on vacation because it made her think of me and my Lilly Pulitzer Collection. Have you tried it yet? You must, it is a lovely Israeli cotton worsted weight yarn available in a wide range of colors and colorways that present as solids, tonals, stripes, all sorts of different combinations of which here is my two tone piece of fiber art just in time for the September yarn crawls.

This was a challenge from a student who needed a black shawl she could wear over a deep neckline and low back to give her outfit a little more visual interest without resorting to something triangular, challenge accepted! Since she wanted to work in a dark color, it was important that most of the work be done into chain spaces.

The lavender, irises and lilacs in my yard tell the story, I love purple flowers.  So when I saw this gorgeous colorway at my local yarn store, The Unruly Stitch, I knew it just had to become something special to remind me of the beautiful slumbering flowers in my yard over the long cold winter. So with hook in hand, I went to work finding the perfect stitch to compliment the yarn. Since these three plants are able to self-propagate in my yard, I wanted the stitch pattern to do the same as it went row by row growing one stitch repeat at a time as I worked through this gorgeous hand dyed yarn. 

The pattern can be worked using any two complementary skeins of your favorite hand dyed fingering weight yarn and a mohair lace weight yarn.

The cowl portion is worked in the round, if desired neck is larger chain more stitches and work more in the round.

Among the many unexplained wonders of this little island—an afternoon’s sail from Hyannis—is the presence of the shade of pink known as Nantucket Red, found on every manner of clothing in town. Cozy Color Works captured the tonal pink/salmon/red perfectly, reminiscent of a pair of chinos from Murray’s Toggery worn while collecting scallop shells at Brandt Point fresh from the churning blue surf.

The stitch pattern, inspired by my desire to find a fresh take on the traditional knit stocking cap, is a simple four-round repeat, ideal for portable knitting wherever your travels make take you.

In my travels from shop to shop along the coast, sometimes a particular hand-dyed yarn will simply jump off the shelf at me to bring back a flood of aquatic memories. This was the case the first time I laid eyes upon the deep tonal blues in Cozy Color Works Navy and Deep Sea Blue. Although only a short bike ride from the fabled sailing waters of Long Island Sound made famous by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, these colors took me further north into colder Gilded Age–steeped waters in Narragansett Bay, to a little cove we frequent just outside Newport.

Worked side to side for easy customization this poncho is a delight to wear.  The DK yarn can easily be compressed and worn under your favorite puffer jacket or over a light weight jacket when you just want that pop of color and warmth.  I wear mine over tank tops and dresses all Summer.

A little teaser from the book.....
This poncho was born out of the popularity of shawls. My knitting group was talking about how tough it is to wear a shawl in a new and innovative way. Sure, a rectangle can become a shrug or cocoon, but collectively we were stumped by what could be done with a triangle. So, with that in mind, I set out to make a piece of wearable fiber art as simple to make as a shawl while also being easy to just pop on after a workout or over a sundress for entertaining friends for morning coffee. The result: a poncho fashioned out of my most popular shawl pattern with a few little lacy bits to keep it interesting. You’ll enjoy working it with a big ball of cheery colors between fields of “knitmeditation” stockinette



Written to present you with different options, this shawl will do a lot for your wardrobe what ever the weather may bring. Wear it with the hood tucked behind the shawl for a warmer weather look and flip it around to deploy the hood as needed.

There is a small inlet near the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery on the north shore of Long Island, which is one of my favorite spots to sit by the water’s edge and read on a winter day. With a delicious slice of chocolate chip pie on the picnic table and a cup of coffee from Sweetie Pies on Main, I can always catch a refreshing break from the toils of modern life, knitting in hand right here. I created this version of my striped shawl, coupling a self-striping yarn with a superwash DK. This version is more compact than the Ocean Beach Sunset Poncho, just the right size to roll up and tuck behind the seat of my roadster and yes, before you ask, I do drive it with the top down year-round—makes it easier to spot in any parking lot.
