Bright, fresh, and a little bit tart — Key Lime Pi is the perfect shawl for late spring through early fall. This half-pi shawl is lightweight and generous in size, making it an ideal layer for cool evenings by the shore or breezy summer strolls.
  
The design features bold stripes, bobbles, and a custom lace border created using my technique of encoded lace. Worked from the top down, Key Lime Pi begins with a simple garter tab and flows into a half-circle shape, finishing with a wide lace edge. It’s knit in two colors — I recommend a medium to strong contrast to get the most out of the stripe pattern.
  
The sample is knit in Garthenor Preseli, a soft organic wool in the colorways Tilia(green) and Rigging(cream). Its vibrant green reminded me instantly of key lime pie and inspired the name of the shawl.

I had a knitting epiphany recently. I only wear shortie socks. I have been knitting ankle and knee socks since learning to knit socks, but the socks I always wear first are my shortie socks. I wanted a really great fitting shortie sock pattern that I could knit over and over again so that every sock in my sock drawer is my favorite kind of sock. This sock features a very simple eyelet pattern, a 1 x 1 ribbed cuff, and short rows in the back to make the back of the ankle ever so much higher than the front. I hope you enjoy knitting and wearing these as much as I have.

Nothing says autumn quite like Pumpkin Pie. This half-pi shawl is the perfect fall accessory. Knit in a luxurious DK-weight yarn, it will keep off the chill of those brisk fall evenings. The warm orange color evokes the aroma of pumpkin pie spices. Pumpkin Pi features my technique of encoded lace. The lace repeats are easy to memorize and the ruffled edge is like the crimped edges of a homemade pie crust.

Get ready for summer. Berry Rita was designed to be a great poolside knit. The bulk of the shawl is knit in soothing stockinette with only color changes to worry about. The stockinette is interrupted with two simple lace panels, and then the shawl is finished off with an oh-so-easy-to-memorize lacy border.
  
I designed this pattern for a [Jilly & Kiddles](www.jillyandkiddles.com) trunk show at [The Local Yarn Store](www.thelocalyarnstore.com) in South Orange. Jill provided yarn support for the shawl, and the colors I used in Fancy Sock are listed below.

This lacy cowl is deceptively sweet. It is beautifully warm and soft with a simple lacy texture. You will know the truth, though. This lovely little cowl is actually encoded with the title phrase. It’s perfect for the misanthrope in all of us. The pattern is written for 3 sizes. The smallest is a close-fitting neck warmer, and the next two sizes can be wrapped 2 or 3 times, respectively.
  
**This is a great pattern for anyone who is new to lace knitting, or who wants a fun, quick project.**

Seleel is a fingering-weight poncho, knit in the round from the bottom up. It has a lace border, encoded with the word “spiral”, and the ribbing spirals around the body up to the neck. The sample pictured above is knit in 1.5”/ 2 cm stripes that are designed to blend into each other. The turtleneck can either be worn unfolded to keep your neck warm, or folded down for a more classic turtleneck look.
  
Seleel would work well in a solid color with a contrasting border, stripes in 2 colors, or even color blocked. It is the ideal project for using up scrap yarn. I have provided the yardage required for each stripe and for a solid version. The multi stripe version makes a perfect scrap yarn project.

**A variable** is defined as something that may or does vary or change; a variable feature or factor. I have designed this shawl to be exactly that. Choose to make a magic ball out of leftover scraps, or work with those mini skeins by your favorite dyer that you have been saving up.
  
Variable a half-pi shawl worked from the center outward. I loved designing it with a magic ball. I had saved my leftover yarns for over a year, so by the time I began the project, I really had no idea what colors I would have coming up or in what quantities. The result is a shawl that I would probably not have envisioned myself. I tend to design my projects in a much more structured way.
  
If the random nature of the pattern is not right for you, no problem. I have written it in such a way that it will be easy to plan your stripes and patterns throughout the shawl. For my second version, I used a Koigu KPPPM Pencil Box. I love them both, and I can’t wait to see how your version looks!

Gran Loves hugs is a stranded colorwork beanie. Using 4 colors, this hat is worked in the round from the bottom up. The decreases are written into the chart. Instructions for this hat are written for the cast on, but after the brim, the instructions are charted only. It’s a quick knit, and the patterns are easy to memorize. **Nonni** is a sport-weight shrug/bolero. It is knit up in a single piece, worked from the bottom up. It has a ribbed border on both ends, and the middle section is stockinette with a lace panel in the center. The lace panel began as the word Nonni encoded into the stitches.
  
The shrug is meant to have about 4" of positive ease. The openings for the arms hit just below the elbow. You can adjust the length of the shrug and the fit of the armholes by increasing or decreasing the number of rows in the center section.

This hat is the companion piece to my Together Stole. It uses a modified version of the same lace and bobbles pattern. The hat is knit in the round from the bottom up. I used a tubular 2 x 2 rib cast on, but you can use your preferred method. One skein of yarn will give you enough to complete the largest size and still have enough left over to make a pom pom, if desired. I used Jilly and Kiddles Ideal DK in colorway “Meet Me On the Hill”. In other years, I would be making the mad dash to finish my Rhinebeck sweater, in anticipation of the most perfect weekend of fall. Instead, Jill Leary, of Jilly and Kiddles Yarn, and I offer you this stole. Consider it a warm and cozy long-distance hug. The Ideal DK is soft and plump. The lace and bobbles work together to create a comfy texture. The sample shown is the largest size. It was knit with 8 skeins of Jilly and Kiddles Yarn Co. Ideal DK in the special colorway, “Meet Me On the Hill,” which is exactly what I hope that you will do in October of 2021.

Back in January of 2020, I took a lace design class with Bristol Ivy. One of the techniques she taught us, was coded lace. I quickly became a woman obsessed. Naturally the patterns get manipulated and altered during the design process, so no secret messages can be decoded here. The two lace patterns in this cowl started from the words “November” and “third”. I designed this cowl to be worn as a reminder to vote in 2020's Presidential election. I knit mine in red, white and blue, but you can choose to knit it in a single color, or in white and the color of your party of choice. Whatever color you choose, please get out and vote in every election.

Twice exceptional students are more often than not profoundly misunderstood. It is not widely known that a student who is identified as gifted can also have a special need or disability. In the best of circumstances, the gift will mask the disability, and twice-exceptional students can “skate by” by compensating with their area of strength. Too often, the opposite is true, and the disability or learning difference masks the gift. The student may be labeled as a “behavior problem” or the focus will be placed on helping with the disability, but no attention will be paid to the advanced academic needs of the 2e student. Boredom can lead to anxiety and a long list of other issues.
  
According to NAGC, the National Association for Gifted children, 2e students “can be highly creative, verbal, imaginative, curious, with strong problem-solving ability, and a wide range of interests or a single, all-consuming expertise. However, at school, they may have difficulty keeping up with course rigor, volume, and demands--resulting in inconsistent academic performance, frustration, difficulties with written expression, and labels such as lazy, unmotivated, and underachiever. All this may hinder their excitement for school and be detrimental to their self-efficacy, self-confidence, and motivation.
  
2e students are bright, quirky, asynchronous, and often neurodiverse. They may have ASD, ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, or one or more of several other disabilities. They often require an IEP. They benefit from classes which are grouped by ability, and they do best with meaningful, rather than rote work.
  
I designed this beanie to build awareness of the 2e community. My hope is that as more people understand what it means to be 2e, that there will be greater acceptance of these wonderful, bright, quirky, unique students and an understanding of how much creativity they bring to the table.

Beanie Mine is simple and quick to knit. I love a classic beanie. I think the shape is universally flattering, and a well-fitting hat is like a hug for your head. I designed this one to have a simple stripe in a contrasting color. It is a traditional pattern that works for men, women, boys and girls. Beanie Mine is a very close fitting beanie. It features a 1x1 rib and a wonderfully dense stockinette fabric made by holding one strand of DK-weight yarn together with one strand of lace-weight silk mohair. The hat has 1-2” of negative ease. Choose a base color with a matching mohair yarn, and a mohair yarn in a contrasting color. Mix it up further by choosing several different shades of contrasting mohair.

As we greet the Pumpkin Spice Lattes and the golden light of Autumn, we also leave behind the hazy heat and fields of wildflowers of Summer. The Ever Blooming shawl lets you take a little bit of Summer with you into the colder months.
  
I designed this shawl as a Summer KAL for The Local Yarn Store in South Orange, New Jersey. Ever Blooming is a top-down triangular, textured shawl. Knit in fingering-weight yarn, it begins with a garter tab and ends with a scalloped knitted on border. The sections are easy to memorize, and the combination of stitches and simple techniques makes for a relaxing but visually interesting knit. This is a good shawl for an advanced beginner who would like to try their hand at a variety of stitches or the advanced knitter who wants an easy summertime knit. The pattern includes instruction for a 3-color version, shown above, and for a 4-color version. The shawl will work well in solids, tonals, or in a combination of solids, tonals and variegated yarns, as shown above.

Joy is a large shawl. It is a right triangle with a knitted-on lace border. The shawl is knit from the short side of the triangle up to the point. The lace border is added after the knitting of the main shawl is complete. I named the shawl after my dear friend, Joy, who gave me the yarn that inspired the shawl as a birthday gift. Joy would also work well in a solid, semi solid, or even a fade. The pattern is written in two sizes. There is a lot of 2 x 2 rib in the shawl, but the end result is a beautifully draped fabric that is wonderful to wrap up in. The knitted ruffly border adds the perfect amount of softness and femininity to the geometric triangle shape.

This is a perfect project for using up fingering or sock-weight scraps. I always end the year with a lot of random bits and partially used balls of fingering-weight yarn. Magic Ball Cowl is the perfect project for using a bunch of these bits and pieces. This simple, textured cowl features panels of stockinette, a 12 stitch reversible cable, and linen stitch. The result is a subtle pattern of vertical textured stripes combined with the horizontal stripes which are a result of the color changes within the magic ball.
  
Normally, I would agree that there are no knots in knitting, but the magic knot is an excellent way to turn lots of tiny balls of yarn into a larger ball that will provide you with lots of surprising color changes throughout the project. I was inspired by Katie of Inside Number 23, who did an excellent blog post about making a magic ball. There are lots of blogs and videos about how to make a magic ball.

Trapezoid is a small cowl, meant for those breezy days when you just want to keep the chill off of your neck. It gets is trapezoid shape from change in number of ribbed stitches from top to bottom. The ribbed sections give it a subtle change in texture. I knit it in Classic Elite Yarns Soft Linen, but you may use any DK weight yarn. It will work in a solid or a self striping yarn. I like the linen blend because it softens as you wear it and becomes a deliciously soft hug around your neck.
